Ask Westminster International University in Tashkent

If you remember Westminster International University in Tashkent organized an Open Day Event in its campus on 19 May 2010. Keeping the fact in mind that not everyone could attend the event physically, I took this event on our blog. People were able to ask their questions virtually just sitting in their offices or homes. It worked perfectly well last week.

WIUT liked this interaction and decided to prolong this online discussion further more. Rawshan, who is both WIUT Marketing Specialist and BA Graduate, will be reading and answering all of your questions.

So if you have any questions, concerns or doubts, please feel 100 % free to ask them here on our blog. You can always ask anonymously or using your nicknames. You can even ask the most controversial questions.

It is high time for all of you to stop suffering in silence and listening to word-of-mouth gossips about WIUT now. Take a courage and ASK!!!! Enjoy the Open Dialogue!

  1. Excuse me Ravshanaka! I have some questions;
1.Can I enter the university if I'm in a second course of lyceum?
    2. If I'll get scholarship, it means that I can't go abroad during 3 years, is it true?
3.If in 5 years WIUT will not revalidate How I'll finish university?
    THANKS IN ADVANCE!

  2. Cool, we can ask questions from our math teacher about Westminster. But actually I asked all questions which were interesting for me at WIUT courses. =))))

    ReplyDelete
  3. Thank you for the questions.
    Here are the answers:
1)Starting this year WIUT is going to realize a new project - part time CFS. If you know, first year at WIUT is a Certificate of Foundation Studies course. This course is going to be offered on part-time mode. It means that 1st and 2nd year students of lyceum and colleges can take WIUT maths and English exams. If they are successfull, they become a WIUT student and study part-time. However, they will have to continue their studies at their lyceums/colleges, and finish it. So, you can apply and study at WIUT before finishing your lyceum.
2)Scholarship students will have to work at government organisations for 5 years after graduation.
3)The process of revalidation or reaccreditation is a normal requirement of any UK university. Westminster International University in Tashkent has been validated or revalidated several times over the past 8 years, each time with confidence. This time WIUT has been revalidated for 5 years which is a great achievement. But it does not mean that the University will close after 5 years.

  4. Oh my God already 3 dynamic questions Rawshan. I guess whole Marketing Department will be busy this week ah? :--)))

    GOOD LUCK!!!!

  5. Ravshan aka does Westminster guarantee to find a good job?

Another question is does Westminster teach us how to be independent and more creative?

    ReplyDelete
  6. Yeah can you please provide some approximate statistics on where WIUT graduates go and how long long it takes them to find decent job? Thank you!

    ReplyDelete
  7. Is it true that ielts exams will not be necessary to enter Westminster in the future?

    ReplyDelete
  8. Hi everyone I also have a question. Is everything taught in english there? I mean 100 %. Big thanks!

    ReplyDelete
  9. Hello,
thanks for your questions, and interest in WIUT.
I will try to answer your questions:

    1) WIUT is a an exclusive accredited partner of the UoW (UK). Only English is used as a communication media.

    2) IELTS is one of the main (but not the only) english requirement. Currently WIUT is planning to introduce new alternatives which may substitute IELTS. But no official information is available at the moment.

3)On our web-site, you can find a list of organisations which employed WIUT graduates in 2008. The link is: http://www.wiut.uz/en/university/graduate/companies
We are planning to publish the statistics for 2009 very soon. So, check our web-site more regularly.

    4) According to the statistics, around 90% of WIUT graduates get employed within 3 months just after graduating. It is a very good indicator that WIUT graduates are highly demanded.

    5) Independent learning is the main principle applied at WIUT.

If you have any other questions (or if the answers are not clear) please feel free to ask. Thank you again for the questions. :)

  10. Good Day Mr.Ravshan, I would like to know whether WIUT provides any kind of internship?

  11. Are WIUT Diplomas and Certificates recognized everywhere in the world? Especially in USA? Thanks.

  12. Good Student18 May, 2010 08:36

Oh hi everybody. Thank you Akmal aka for this wonderful chance. Because I can not come to this open days ceremony in wednesday. So i have a unick chance to ask my question whithout going there.

So my question is. Do WIUT really kick out those students who don't care about their homework and do not study? If yes, how many students are become out of their education at wesminster every year? Is there some retakes? Thank you Rawshan aka and Akmal aka.

    ReplyDelete
  13. As far as I'm concerned Westminster has not a high quality of education. Because it is out of the world 100 best universities. How it can educate students with such low rating.

    ReplyDelete
  14. 2Sarvar:
Yes, WIUT helps its students with internships.

    2Sanjar:
WIUT students are considered as University of Westminster (UK) students at the same time. Graduates of WIUT and UoW (UK) are awarded with the same diploma which is recognised worldwide.
Sample of diploma is available at our web-site, or you can have a look on it if you visit the university.

    2Good Student:
Yes there are strict academic regulations at WIUT and they are the same as in UoW. If you fail an exam or module you will have a chance to re-take it. If you fail all chances you will not be given a credit for that module. If you can not gather enough credits, you may not be able to progress to the next level. The system is very clear and strict, but it is not easy to explain it in detail here. If you are so interested, please pay a visit to the University.
By the way, if you are a real Good Student (as your nick states) you should be fine ;)

    2Anonymous:
Thank you for your concern. But it is not good to spread such kind of gossips without any proof. If you really KNOW that the quality is not good, please share your experience with us and we'll try to improve. If you do not have such an experience, how can you assess the quality?
Regarding the top 100, yes you are right. There are thousands of universities in the world, and WIUT is not in the top 100 among them. But it does not necessarily mean that the quality is not good.

    ReplyDelete
  15. Hi could you please tell us more about WIUT facilities? Thank you!

    ReplyDelete
  16. Hi Rawshan aka, Akmal aka, I want know anything about your pr-foundation course. Can you tell more? Will it be easier to enter westminster after this course?

    ReplyDelete
  17. Alan here, 1st Deputy Rector from London

My colleague Ravshan has answered all the questions. I would however like to refer to the one about Ranking. There are a number of ranking systems, all use different methodologies. Ranking systems have little to do with quality. They are like branding schemes, but most top branded goods are now made in many countries including China, Vietnam, etc...the quality is mostly the same as the same controls are used by the companies. UK universities are subject to the same Quality systems but these are not part of the Ranking system. Westminster is not high in the world ranking but that does not mean the quality is lower. In all the Quality Assurance outcomes Westminster has secured full confidence. It may not have the best researchers or the best student hostels, one of the elements of ranking systems but its graduates get jobs...good jobs and thats the best test

  18. I study at this pre-foundation course now. Name is different now. It is called BEAP. I want to know how we will take IELTS if we are not getting ready for IELTS? Can you answer this question please? I did not want to show my name. Sorry! And thank you!

  19. Thanks, Alan.
Dear blog users, you can also ask your WIUT related questions directly from Mr. Alan France - our first deputy Rector Academic on his blog: http://talk2alan.blogspot.com

  20. 2Anora:

To be frank, entering WIUT is relatively easy than entering other universities in Uzbekistan, because here you are required to fulfill a particular entry requement to pass, and your success does not depend on competetion. (I am not talking about scholarship) Just get 40% on maths, and 5.5 on IELTS and... "congratulations" - you are a Westminsterian! To achieve the required result, WIUT gives you several chances, and that's one of its unique points.

New WIUT courses which have been re-named to Certificate of International Foundation Studies (level 1 and 2) are intented for prospective WIUT students. If you study hard and follow all instructions of the lecturers, yes, the course should help you to enter WIUT more easily. If you are a lazy student, nothing/noone can help you pass the exams.

By the way, WIUT administration is considering the possibility of accepting CIFS students without IELTS exam. But the final decision has not yet been made.

    2 Anonymous:

It is OK if you do not want to disclose your name. However, your question is a bit difficult for me to answer, because I am not a specialist in this sphere. I do not teach English. But please keep in mind that the course syllabus (programme) was developed by a group of english teachers. I would be glad if anyone involved in the syllabus development could answer instead of me.

    2Akmal aka:
Can you please ask your colleques to share their opinion on this issue?

Thank you all for your interesting questions, and I will be looking forward for more ;)

  21. Is it allowd to BEAP pupils go and to use library in Lyceum? It is also hot when at time when we have lessons in the lyceum building. Sun directly enters our room and targets all of us there. Can WIUT put some curtains and switch on the condioners? Many of us angry and don't want to come to lesson. But we want... ((((

    ReplyDelete
  22. Oh by the way thank you for solving our problem in our classroom. We want really study. Please don't be angry to me ((((

    ReplyDelete
  23. Is it possible to enter Westminster without math exam or maybe with result less than 40? For example 35/30.

I don't think Pre-Foundation course can help us to pass IELTS, because here we learn general English not IELTS. There are some technique we should know about IELTS, but we don't study about it.

    ReplyDelete
  24. Oh my God it seems like Open Day turned into Complain Day.

OK let me try to answer the question as regards to IELTS. WIUT knows it very well that we (English teachers) at our CIFS/BEAP course have not been focusing mainly on IELTS and we have not been teaching any IELTS techniques, tips and strategies. Reason for this is that this course is not an IELTS preparation course at all.

Whether our students (those who are in BEAP) will be required to take IELTS or not in order to enter WIUT, it is all being discussed by the University now and final decision will be announced hopefully soon.

    ReplyDelete
  25. Hmm... Interesting BEAP. I don't know about letter 'B', but EAP means 'English for Academic Purposes', isn't it? Are you sure students study Academic English?

    ReplyDelete
  26. 'B' stands for Basics and yes we teach some basics of EAP in our course. For example upcoming 2 weeks we will be covering some of academic writing stuff and students will be writing essays which after feedback will go into their portfolio of written tasks.

Mmmm.... seems like you are my colleague at WIUT or another teacher of English from another university. I am glad that our blog is also interesting for teachers. Welcome on board :---))))

  27. Akmal aka three of my friends go to BEAP or CIFS i don`t know exactly. One of them you know and two other go to pre-intermediate level. They have been studying in that course almost 2 month but i don`t see any result) It`s said that in BEAP/CIFS student won`t be taught grammar. My friends also said that they always speak, discuss some topics. Is it right? If students won`t be taught grammar, how they can speak or write in English? In addition it seems that BEAP`s teachers aren`t strick.Maybe I`m wrong.Maybe everything depends on student.Cuz your student Hushnud has developed. He studies hard and tries to achieve the best.

  34. Can you tell us more about westcamp? How good it is?

    ReplyDelete
  35. Dear All,

All of your questions and comments are being read by WIUT. A little bit of patience and you will receive you replies.

    Thank you!!!!

    Cheers!

    ReplyDelete
  36. Dear blog users,
WIUT is reading your comments and thanks you for your valuable feedback. Indeed your opinion counts and serves for its further development. That is why we decided to continue this discussion. WIUT is transparent, and ready to answer your questions as much as possible.

However, we are sorry for a delay in the answers. Please try to understand that we have a lot of other daily tasks and sometimes it is difficult to reply here promptly. Here are the answers:

    1) Regarding the rooms, I can just pass your comments to the administration. I hope the conditions will be improved. Actually, the conditions are already very good. I know it, because I teach there as well.

    2) Pre-foundation students can use WIUT lyceum library with limited access.

    3) Maths exam is a very important entry requirement. Here at the university you study business, and business requires at least some mathematical abilities.

Teaching accounting and finance related subjects to students who do not know basic maths, is UNREAL. That is why, WIUT is not planning to cancel or decrease the maths exam requirement.

    4) UoW diplomas have different classes based on your achievement. Scholarship students will not be obliged to work at government organisations if they get first or upper second class honours diploma.

5)Doston, I do not know which page you are referring to, but we have enough number of foreign teachers. For example, Rowan Wagner (USA) teaches business, Mr Lai Chee Hun (Malaysia) teaches accounting, Carlos Martines (Spain) teaches law and several other teachers work for WIUT. Moreover, all local teachers are also well qualified and got their postgraduate degrees abroad. Trust me, if a teacher is a citizen of foreign country, it does not necessarily mean that he/she teaches better!

    6) As mentioned in one of previous answers, pre-foundation students may or may not be accepted without IELTS. It has not been decided yet.

    7) WestCamp is a project of our graduates. WIUT is supporting this project, and several teachers and students are involved in the project as team leaders. Please find more info from www.west.uz

Dear blog users, thanks again for your questions, we appreciate your interest in the university and percieve your criticism as your contribution to our further development.

    Please keep asking questions :)

  37. Hi Rawshan thank you for your detailed reply. I actually agree with the rooms in our lyceum building. We definitely need some shades or curtains and air-cons to be switched on. Classes are held from 4 to 7 pm, Monday, Wednesday, Fridays. The sun is targeting all of us directly into our eyes there and room gets too hot. Thank you for passing this comment to our admin.

  38. Just one more positive thing that impressed me very much last week. We were having a Poster Presentation at our BEAP2 and when we finished it students from Jasur aka's group at our BEAP level-2 presented him ''The World's Best Teacher Certificate'' which really proves it again that our local teachers are competent enough in the same line with foreign national teachers. Bravo Jasur aka.

  40. Shakhlo,

Thank you for the question. I decided to quote Alan's comment to answer this question:

    Julia said...
"please, let me know why Westminster University is one of the best in Uzbekistan"

    Alan said...
"I am not sure I am the best person to tell you why Westminster is the best... its my students, graduates and colleagues that know why its the best and make it the best. They are the jewel of the university. one reason is that WIUT is open and honest to opinions, its becoming a real university with research and scholarship, it encourages students to think for themselves, to be independent thinkers and learners...plus the systems are in place to protect the student and staff. this is not only the british way its delivered by my Uzbek colleagues...

Its the place where you can learn about yourself for yourself and be proud of your academic achievements"

  41. Westminster people before starting to study at PF course WIUT people said that they teach us IELTS and then when we begin the education there and paiyed the cash they began teaching just simple English, I mean not IELTS just everyday English. Why? Why they cheated us like that? Shame on university. I had ask my parents to give me a personal IELTS teacher and they are very angry with me now. I really don't want to enter westminster anymore.

  42. Another angry boy29 May, 2010 11:00

I support you Angry boy, in addition WIUT promised that if course wouldn't be validated they should pay for our IELTS exam. Another thing is that there isn't any WIUT teachers I mean who teach at WIUT real students :--((
Preparation courses were much better than PF course. I made a huge mistake by going this course. If I managed to go to tutors I could enter WIUT with grant, but it is impossible now :-((( It was like a game I reckon. And this course I think will never be validated. I suggest WIUT to close this PF and continue Prep. Courses.

    ReplyDelete
  43. thanks for the feedback

I think there is a misunderstanding. Our research on entrants to WIUT and their performance in WIUT over the last 8 years shows that ILETS is not the best indicator of success. That is the higher the ILETS does not mean the better the student performance in WIUT. And many who get the minimum ILETS have problems in the first two years with English. One of the main reasons is that the students are coached by ILETS tutors how to pass the ILETS exam and not taught how to use English and how to learn.

We analysed the perfromance of students on the Preparation courses and those that entered WIUT. Only 30% of the students on the preparation courses entered the University. Some did not want to enter the university they wanted ILETS for other reasons. Those that entered from the preparation course did not perform any better then those who were not on the preparation courses.

The PF courses were designed to provide a stronger foundation to ensure that students when entering the university were able to perform better than those with ILETS.

The course has been validated by WIUT and the University of Westminster has approved, in principle that the PF (or to give its proper title Certificate in International Studies Level 2) will be accepted as the equivalent of ILETS 5.5. The final stage is that the exact admission statement has to be approved.

I am sorry you both are angry with the course. I hope you have feed back your views to the tutors.

    Alan

  44. I'm not sure Mr.France that lessons will teach us to perform well in Uni life, because intermediate level is not so high and most of students have studied intermediate before entering PF. Many students (friends of course) told me that course is not satisfactory. In addition, there are too many students in one group, however in preparation course there were 6 or 7 students and it was really good.

  48. Hey, if WIUT was afriad to answer your questions, they would not open this discussion. That's my personal opinion.
Can you show any other university (in Uzb) which is so open for discussions???
    WIIIUUUUT, WIIIIUUUT, WIIIUUUT!

    ReplyDelete
  49. Dear students,
Firstly, I have to mention that your feedbacks are quite useful for us since they work for development of our new Pre-foundation courses. It should be admitted that because of its newness, it is common to expect some flaws in its working system. However, if you tell us about these things we definitely will be able to "fix" them soon.
Well, now, as for your questions:
    - The differences in the numbers of students in the groups can be varied because of their level, suitable time, students' preference, etc.
    - The time of validation has nothing to do with the quality of PF courses. It was UK's Westminster's decision to postpone that event several times, because of different reasons. However, we had been waiting for them since February. As you know PF courses have been validated by University of Westminster (UK) as Certificate in International Foundation Studies (CIFS).
    - However, the admission issues of PF students to WIUT is being considered at the moment, so you will know about the decisions soon.

    Good luck!
