Are First Impressions Always Right?

Every personal or business relationship starts with a first impression. Psychologists say that when you meet someone for the first time, they make an impression on you less than thirty seconds.

We evaluate another person using three Vs: visual (how you look, your clothes), vocal (your voice) and verbal (what you say). When you meet someone for the first time, your body language and your clothes make 93 % of the first impression. Only 7 % are the words you say.

There is an expression in English: You will never have a second chance to make a first impression. But what makes a good impression on you? Is it possible to know about a person by one look? To what extend is first impression right or wrong? How do you judge people? How do you distinguish bad and good people? Share your ideas and opinions with all of us this week.

  1. For me eye contact. You should look at the other person when you meet them. I don't trust a person who doesn't make an eye contact.

  2. You should wear clean and neat clothes. A dirty shirt makes a very bad impression, and so do dirty shoes.

  3. Your physical appearance and body language say a lot about you. Sit up straight (if you are in a job interview). Your body should say 'I am friendlu and confident person'.

  4. In Canada, you should shake a person's hand, man or woman. You shouldn't kiss them for the first meeting. It is also a good idea to use the other person's first name quickly. It is more friendly.

  5. I think you should not wear a very short skirt for a first meeting, or an interview. It can send the wrong impression. For a man, I think a shirt and tie make a good impression at an interview.

  6. You should smile when you meet someone for the first time. A smile is the best introduction. It is friendly. A smile is universal.

  7. The best way to leave positive impressions about you is to be as usual. but we should also know that people judge by your clothes,by the tone of speech, education and character which are necessary too.Nowadays the main problem is that new youth make imprssions by only clothes and other things don`t matter to them

Well I can say that I desagree with David! You know that some people shy and thats why they don't make an eye contact, especially girls!
I can say that first inpressian make a role in a future relationship, but sometimes when you began closer with this person he ogcourse forget his first impression about you!

  12. Anyway, first impression is crucial. Because people after that meeting might not change their opinion. However, it is wrong way dealing with first impression.

Well I never make any judgment after first meeting. Also I give more attention to speech. We can know about him or her during the chat. It shows his or hers intelligence, way of thinking and blah blah blah.

In fact, yes most of people give attention to clothes so if you go somewhere first time, wear something clean and maybe formal (tie and suit not necessary).

  15. Hm...In my opinion, eyes are very important! Very easy to understand who is this person when you see into it! Eyes are a mirror of the soul!

  16. Irina are you sure about eyes, could you tell more about it. Because I don't distinguish =))))))

  17. Yes, i absolutly sure that only eyes can show me real personality of each person! For example, you see that his or her eyes have speciall sight. I can't explain this with words, it's some feeling when you look at other eyes. And after this you can understand, this person is good man/woman or not! All impressions which i feel after one meeting with person are truthful! During period i can change my opinion but finally i understand that my first impression was right!

  19. Play a joke or make a fun- it's your style! So Irina yes eyes or to be exact look is one of the important things...but you know some peopleare very good actors and they can change their look that you belive this person! (like cat in cartoon Shrek)! And first impression is not always right! As great writer Shakespeare said : "LIFE IS THATRE AND PEOPLE ARE ACTORS IN IT"! So that you say Irina?

  20. Of course many people well pretend. In my opinion they can perfectly change their behaviour or appearance, but impossible to change eyes! If her/his eyes have some specific sight, it's unreal to change! And it's not depend from your actor's abilities!
